Liminal States and the MakerLabs Tools for Change Residency!

I’m going to be part of the MakerLabs “Tools for Change” Residency — a program that supports women and gender-diverse creators in exploring fabrication, design, and technology in a collaborative, hands-on environment. Over the next two months, I’ll be learning new tools like CNC routing, laser cutting, and woodworking while developing my latest project, Liminal States.

What excites me most is the chance to connect with other makers — to share ideas, learn from one another, and create in a space that encourages exploration, curiosity, and connection through making. Spaces like this matter — they remind us that creativity doesn’t happen in isolation but in conversation with people, materials, and the world around us.

Do I need another project? WHY YES! YES I DO.

So, what’s this one about, you ask? It’s a progression of my Memory Project — still rooted in sound and song, but this time I’m bringing the physical elements forward. The foundation is music, but I’m designing the boxes that hold it all together: sculptural, sensor-based sound vessels that are cleaner, more refined, and beautifully wired. When you open them, you’ll see the circuitry and cords laid out like a visual symphony — functional, minimal, and alive. I almost love making these boxes as much as the music itself, though it’s always about the compositions first.

Liminal States is an evolving sound and video installation built around the spaces between things — between sound and silence, self and other, motion and stillness. At its heart are eight original compositions that form a living architecture of sound, designed to listen and respond to the audience. Throughout the installation, the sound boxes capture subtle gestures — a breath, a hum, a touch — and transform them into layers of evolving music.

Video projections extend this experience, translating sound into light and movement so the entire space feels alive and breathing. Each visitor becomes part of the composition, shaping its rhythm and texture through their presence.

Ultimately, Liminal States is an exploration of connection — between breath and circuit, body and environment, person and space. It’s a place to stand in the in-between, to listen, and to dissolve gently into the world.

MakerLabs feels like the perfect place for me right now — a space where I can learn, experiment, and step outside my home studio. I’ll be using the tools to shape different elements of the project, but also to push myself to connect, to make, and to move beyond my usual work.
