Wildroot & Amber is a sonic installation and performance project that explores the fragile, potent threads connecting memory, nature, and the body. Created during a residency at Studio Kura in Japan, this work invites audiences into a tactile, immersive experience—where sound becomes a way to remember, and objects become portals to the past.
At its core, Wildroot & Amber is a kind of modern-day apothecary—not one that offers remedies, but one that preserves echoes. Each element in the installation—earth, a twisted branch, a single earring, an old pair of glasses—is placed in a glass jar and labeled like a relic. But these aren’t passive objects. Using the Playtronica controller and Ableton Live, the jars become touch-sensitive instruments. When touched, they release sounds from a curated archive: forest recordings, melodic pulses, vocal fragments, whispers, and elemental hums.
The performer (that’s me—Mel·lif·lu·ous) moves through this world like a conductor of memory, sculpting sound in real time using violin, voice, Push 3, and looping tools like the Microcosm. Each interaction is spontaneous, each song different—never to be repeated in the same way. The audience is not just watching—they’re part of a ritual, surrounded by sound, texture, and presence.
This project emerged from a deep need to reconnect—with my ancestors, with the land, and with a quieter, more magical way of listening. It’s a response to our hyper-digital lives and our detachment from the physical and the ancient. There’s something sacred in remembering. Something powerful in touching an object and hearing it speak back.
Wildroot & Amber is a space to pause. To listen. To feel.
It’s not a performance you just watch—it’s one you enter.
A shelf of spells.
A ritual of touch.
An apothecary of the forgotten.
